Oyo NAWOJ Empowers Women Journalists on Gender Sensitive Reporting
In a bid to foster a media landscape that empowers and promotes a just and equitable society for all, the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ, Oyo State chapter, is training women journalists on Gender Equity and Safety, as well as, Gender sensitive Reporting.
The three-day training which is in collaboration with the Norwegian Union of Journalists, is ongoing at the NUJ Press Centre, Iyaganku Ibadan.
Chairperson of NAWOJ, Oyo state Chapter, Mrs Omolola Alamu, described the workshop as a crucial step towards creating an inclusive and responsible media landscape.
“We must recognize and challenge harmful gender stereotypes and biases that perpetuate discrimination and violence against women and marginalized groups”.
Speaking on Gender Equity and Combating sexual harrassment at workplaces, one of the facilitators and Trainer, Mrs Rafat Salami, who works with Voice of Nigeria, noted that gender inequality and other related issues were due to socially constructed roles that exist in the society.
Mrs Salami said gender issues such as equal pay, access to jobs and promotion, sexual harrassment, physical safety, equal opportunity for employment still persist in many parts of the world today.
Speaking earlier, the Oyo State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Inclusion , Mrs. Toyin Balogun, who was represented by the Director of programmes, Mr Ogunjimi Olutoyediya, praised the organisers for providing a platform to champion the fight against gender inequality.
“The fight against gender inequality is all encompassing. It involves everybody and we all have a role to play, particularly journalists who are the anchor point to reach the masses”.
