Nollywood actress, Omowunmi Dada, has revealed that she ended a relationship after discovering that her partner had begun observing Islamic practices despite initially identifying as a Christian.
Dada made this known during an interview with VJ Adams, where she explained that the difference in their religious beliefs made it difficult for her to continue the relationship.
According to the actress, she was surprised when the man told her he was fasting during Ramadan. When she asked why, he explained that becoming a Muslim was what would make his mother happy.
Dada said the revelation made her realise that they could not build the kind of family she wanted.
She said she wanted to marry a practising Christian and raise her children in the Christian faith.
“I dated someone who, when I met him, was a Christian, and then sometime later Ramadan started, and he said he was fasting. I said, ‘Why?’ and he said, ‘Because that is what will make his mom happy.’ He said being a Muslim is what will make his mom happy. Right then, I knew I couldn’t be with him.
“I have nothing against Muslims; I have Muslim friends who are amazing people, by the way. But for the kind of family that I want to raise, I would love to raise my children the Christian way. I want to be able to hold hands with my husband in one faith, in unity as a family.”
The actress added that although her partner pleaded with her to remain in the relationship and offered to attend church with her, she was uncomfortable with his position that their future children should also visit the mosque and learn about Islam.
Dada said shared faith was important to the kind of family she hoped to build.
