Veteran Nigerian Juju and Highlife musician Iyun Janet Ajilore, popularly known as Saint Janet, has been laid to rest in Abeokuta, Ogun State, weeks after her sudden death.
According to Premium Times, the singer was buried on Wednesday at her residence following funeral activities attended by her children, relatives, colleagues and admirers.
Among those who joined the family to mourn the late musician was veteran Juju singer Gentleman Dele Taiwo, alongside other members of the traditional music community.
Videos from the burial ceremony showed emotional scenes as Saint Janet’s children and other mourners gathered around her remains before she was committed to the earth.
The burial followed a series of funeral activities that began with a candlelight service, Christian wake and Artists’ Night at the AIT/Faaji FM compound in Kola Alagbado, Lagos.
The family had earlier announced that the singer would be buried at her residence in Abeokuta.
Saint Janet, fondly called “Mama Yabis,” carved a unique niche for herself in Nigeria’s Juju and Highlife music scene through a style that blended music, humour, satire and provocative social commentary.
Her energetic performances and unconventional approach made her a distinctive figure in the traditional music industry, where controversy often accompanied her public persona.
It had earlier reported that the Nigerian entertainment industry was thrown into mourning following the death of the popular Juju and Highlife musician.
