The House of Representatives Ad-Hoc Committee investigating the controversial Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council (PFIPC) has directed the Inspector-General of Police to produce the alleged promoter of the agency, Adeniyi Adeyemi, before it on Wednesday.
The committee issued the directive after receiving testimonies from key government officials, including the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs. Didi Walson-Jack, Director-General of the Budget Office, Tanimu Yakubu, officials of the Central Bank of Nigeria, the Accountant-General of the Federation and the Nigeria Police Force.
Adeyemi, who has been in police custody for over two weeks, is expected to answer questions over allegations that forged presidential documents were used to seek official recognition, office accommodation and budgetary allocation for the agency, which lawmakers say has no legal backing.
Meanwhile, there are growing calls for the committee to invite the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, following claims linking his office to the matter.
Some stakeholders also urged the panel to invite the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, to clarify his office’s role.
The Human and Environmental Development Agenda (HEDA) also called for a thorough investigation, urging transparency and accountability in the handling of the case.
Representing the Inspector-General of Police, Assistant Commissioner of Police Bashir Abdullahi told the committee that criminal charges had already been filed against Adeyemi at the Federal High Court and warned against disclosures that could prejudice ongoing investigations.
Chairman of the Committee, Yusuf Gagdi, insisted that Adeyemi must appear before lawmakers, saying the allegations involve the integrity of public institutions and individuals.
The committee is expected to continue its investigation on Wednesday, with Adeyemi’s appearance likely to guide further recommendations on possible administrative, legislative and criminal actions.
