The family and friends of Emmanuel Danladi have petitioned the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Tunji Disu, calling for the reopening of an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
The petition followed the reported closure of the case by the Criminal Investigation Department of the Oyo State Police Command, a move the petitioners described as hasty and unsatisfactory.
Danladi, a 20 year-old son of an Inspector, Mr. Akaso Danladi who just gained admission to study Computer science in Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, Ondo State was said to have died during a fire outbreak in bock 14 of the Iyaganku Police Barracks in Ibadan on December 22, 2025.
The incident reportedly occurred in the early hours of the day, at about 4:45 a.m., under circumstances the family insists remain unclear and controversial.
According to the petitioners, several key aspects of the case were either ignored or not thoroughly investigated before authorities declared the case closed.
They alleged that indications pointing to possible arson, murder and homicide were not properly examined by investigators.
The family questioned why the deceased was allegedly locked inside the apartment at the time of the fire, preventing any chance of escape.
They also raised concerns over a reported explosion involving a freezer in the apartment, describing it as suspicious and requiring further inquiry.
The petitioners demanded clarification on what might have been stored in the freezer, particularly by the suspect’s mother, as part of efforts to uncover the cause of the explosion.
In addition, they queried the actions of the suspect, especially the allegation that the suspect left the apartment with the deceased’s phone.
They maintained that the sequence of events leading to the fire and during the incident had not been clearly established.
The petition described the incident as one surrounded by unanswered questions and inconsistencies that require urgent attention.
Calling for intervention, the family urged the Inspector-General of Police to direct a fresh and comprehensive investigation into the matter.
They stressed the need to determine both the immediate and remote causes of the fire that led to Danladi’s death.
The petitioners said a thorough probe would help ensure accountability and strengthen public confidence in the justice system.
They added that reopening the case is necessary to ensure that the death of the deceased does not go in vain and that justice is served.
