The Olubadan of Ibadan-designate, Oba Rasheed Ladoja, has recalled that his administration as Governor of Oyo State had perfected arrangements for the return of schools to Catholic missions before the plan was truncated by powerful interests.
Oba Ladoja stated this while receiving the Catholic Archbishop of Ibadan, Most Reverend Gabriel Abegunrin, who paid him a courtesy visit at his Bodija residence in Ibadan.
The monarch explained that the move was in response to the passionate request of Archbishop Emeritus Alaba Job during his tenure, adding that the arrangement was ready but was frustrated from being implemented.
Oba Ladoja thanked the Archbishop and his entourage, pledging continuous support for the Catholic Church.
Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja served as the Governor of Oyo State from May 2003 to January 2006 under the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
His administration was noted for its populist policies, educational reforms and infrastructural projects, but it was marred by political turbulence that culminated in his controversial impeachment by the Oyo State House of Assembly in 2006, later overturned by the Supreme Court.
Earlier, Archbishop Abegunrin described Oba Ladoja as a symbol of humility, noting that despite his achievements in politics and other spheres, he had remained close to the people.
The cleric also lauded Ladoja’s tenure as Governor of Oyo State, describing it as unique and progressive. He expressed gratitude to the new Olubadan and his planning committee for choosing the Catholic Church as venue for his coronation thanksgiving, scheduled to hold at the Church of Ascension, Bodija.
Archbishop Abegunrin prayed for a peaceful reign, divine guidance and greater prosperity for Ibadan land.
