The Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, has passed on, bringing to an end an era of one of Nigeria’s longest-reigning and most revered traditional monarchs.
Governor Dapo Abiodun in an official announcement described the reign of the late monarch as a beacon of unity, cultural preservation, and progressive development.
The Governor, said the late monarch left a lasting legacy through his dedication to the welfare of the Ijebu people and his efforts to improve education, healthcare, and the economy in Ogun State and Nigeria.
Oba Adetona, who ascended the throne in 1960, was a prominent and influential voice among Yoruba traditional rulers and across Nigeria. His reign, which spanned over six decades, was marked by uncommon courage, wisdom and unwavering commitment to the progress of Ijebuland and Nigeria at large.
Born in 1934, Oba Adetona was known for his forthrightness, fierce advocacy for justice and constitutional monarchy. He played a significant role in preserving Yoruba heritage while fostering peaceful coexistence across the nation.
The late monarch was also instrumental in the establishment of the Oba Sikiru Adetona College of Governance Studies in Ogun State, which the government recently moved to affiliate with the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru.
Tributes have started pouring in from traditional institutions, political leaders and well-wishers across the country, with many hailing the monarch’s legacy of honour and service.
