The Oyo State chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has condemned the persistent harassment and intimidation of sports journalists covering events at the Lekan Salami Stadium, Ibadan, describing the trend as a threat to press freedom and a hindrance to the development of sports journalism.
In a communique issued at the end of its congress held on Thursday, May 8, 2025, at the Dapo Aderogba Hall, NUJ Press Centre, Ibadan, the association expressed serious concern over the unsafe working conditions journalists face while on duty at the stadium.
The congress called on relevant authorities, particularly the Oyo State Ministry of Youth and Sports, to urgently secure and clearly demarcate the media men to prevent access by non-journalists.
The congress frowned at the continued harassment and intimidation of journalists covering events at the Lekan Salami Stadium and called for improved safety and recognition of accredited media professionals,” the communique stated.
SWAN Oyo further urged media organisations to enforce ethical standards among their staff, particularly targeting the rising trend of unprofessional banter among some Yoruba-language on-air presenters, calling for greater decorum and professionalism in sports broadcasting to maintain the integrity of journalism.
Among other resolutions, the congress also advocated for a three-year validity period for both national and newly proposed state SWAN identity cards, to reduce the administrative and financial burden on members.
It also resolved to hold state congresses bi-monthly to enhance internal communication and planning.
In a forward-looking move, the chapter announced plans to mobilize support and sponsorship from sports stakeholders to host a befitting 60th anniversary celebration of SWAN in Oyo State.
