In a bold move to boost agricultural development and improve rural economies, the Oyo State Government has awarded contracts worth N3.5 billion for the first phase of a major market modernization initiative under the Oyo State Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing Project (OY-RAAMP).
The project will see the transformation of three key markets across the state: Aare-Alasa Market in Ona-Ara Local Government Area, Oja-Agbe Market in Iseyin, and Oja-Oba Market in Ibarapa Central. Each market is set to receive critical infrastructure upgrades that will make them more efficient and farmer-friendly.
At the contract signing ceremony, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Barrister Olasunkanmi Olaleye, emphasized that the initiative is part of the state’s drive to modernize its agricultural sector and ensure better access to markets for rural farmers.
We are committed to turning these rural markets into modern hubs that will enhance agricultural productivity and improve logistics for farmers and traders,” he said.
The upgrades will include improved access roads, modern storage facilities, and better trading environments—all aimed at reducing post-harvest losses and increasing profitability for local farmers.
The OY-RAAMP State Project Coordinator, Engr. Mrs. Adeola Ekundayo, revealed the financial details of the project:
Aare-Alasa Market – N1.23 billion
Oja-Agbe Market – N1.22 billion
Oja-Oba Market – N1.04 billion
She explained that the market upgrades are part of the Agro-Logistics component of RAAMP, which focuses on building stronger rural infrastructure and linking agricultural zones to urban markets.
The contractors selected for the projects include:
Quicbond Nigeria Ltd – Aare-Alasa Market
Lee Fakino Nigeria Ltd – Oja-Agbe Market
AB-Bond Habitat Ltd – Oja-Oba Market
Ekundayo also called on the contractors to work closely with local communities throughout the project’s execution, noting that community engagement is vital for long-term success.
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Mrs. Abosede Owoeye, described the signing as a “major milestone” in the state’s agricultural development efforts, aligning with Governor Seyi Makinde’s vision of achieving food security and rural economic empowerment.
